Getting your hair ready for the day can be a challenge for some women. Unfortunately you can’t always go to the salon to have your hair styled.

So how can you create stunning hairstyles in the comfort of your own home with just the use of a simple straightener? If you’re tired of the usual straight do and want to turn things up a notch, here are some fresh new styles to try:

Sweet Beach Waves

It doesn’t matter if it’s summer or in the middle of the chilly winter, if you want to look more relaxed and sexy, go for waves. Waves are simple curls that add volume. Creating waves with the use of a flat iron can be difficult at first, you need to practice with an unplugged straightener before you try it with your hair.

The first important thing to remember is to never try to curl hair when it’s wet. Curling must be done on dry hair when it is easiest to shape. Ironing wet hair can cause irreversible damage to your hair.

To begin curling, preheat your flat iron for 2 minutes. Then, use 1.5 -2 cm of your hair and wrap it gently, curling forward using your flat iron. Divide your hair into sections and continue curling until all strands are curled. Don’t forget to use a hairspray after curling to keep your beach waves in for the whole day.

Effortless Bun Hairstyle

Do tight buns feel a little too polished for casual? Using a large barrelled curling iron, you can turn your tight bun into a gorgeous effortless bun in less than five minutes.

It’s a simple twirl and pull method, you can learn in just a few tries. First, use the curling iron to create voluminous curls. Just like how you did on the beach waves, but tighter. Don’t forget to use a hairspray for better hold. Then, pull your hair into a high ponytail and slowly twist it into a bun. Use your finger to separate the ends for a casual and more relaxed look.

Tip: Women with thin hair can use hair extensions to create volume. Simply add the extension to your ponytail before wrapping the bun.

Siren Wave

Although it’s called a straightener, one of the great things you can do is waves. And now that summer’s near in season, what better way to style your hair than this cool mermaid-hair look. Siren waves are a little different from the full curls we’re used to seeing. They don’t just add volume to hair, they also create bounce and a smooth look to your strands.

Creating siren waves uses a technique where you have to hold the iron horizontally. You need to work on shallow, wide sections of your hair to create these distinctive curls. While holding the iron horizontally, place strands of hair between the iron and start curling right at the roots. Rotate it to 360 degrees away from the head.

Tip: Always use a heat protectant when working with straighteners to reduce damage caused by the heat.

The New Sleek

It is straight hair, but not the kind of straight that makes you look like you’re one of the members of a metal band. The new sleek hairstyle creates movement in your otherwise boring vertical strands.

To create this hairstyle, simply start right at the roots and angle your straightener so that it lifts the strand away from the head. Then run it down slowly working through the lengths until you’ve covered all your strands. If you have thick hair, you should do this process more slowly.

Timeless Flipped-Out Ends

If you want a hairstyle that looks more retro, you can try flipped ends. Flipped ends are best for hair that is chin length, anything shorter can be hard to work with.

Creating flipped ends requires you to run the straightener over the bottom of your hair shaft. Then, roll the iron upward while your hair is still between the plate (like when you’re curling, but in an upward position). Repeat this process until you have worked on all ends.

Tip: If you’d like to try the modern version of this style, simply create softer flips.
